{"id":2295,"date":"2012-09-09T07:49:22","date_gmt":"2012-09-09T14:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.andreaswacker.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/09\/waste-of-time-news\/"},"modified":"2012-09-09T07:49:22","modified_gmt":"2012-09-09T14:49:22","slug":"waste-of-time-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.andreaswacker.com\/blog\/2012\/09\/09\/waste-of-time-news\/","title":{"rendered":"waste of time: news"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I found this today on a web site of a pewspaper:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/china_growth.png\"\/><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<p>Countless publications show the same AP story.<\/p>\n<p>What is the problem with this?<\/p>\n<p>According to the latest numbers China grew by 8.9%.<br \/>\nSince this is China one could also say: grew <em>only<\/em> by 8.9%<\/p>\n<p> The US GDP grew 1.7% in the same time.<\/p>\n<p>The headline of the AP story says something else.<br \/>\nSo does the first sentence.  And 8.9% growth are being called &#8216;anemic&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>This is a very simple thing: growth did decline by 0.3%. Growth did. NOT the actual output.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder what happens to the 99% of topics in the news that are more complex and faceted than this China statistic.<\/p>\n<p>After I wrote this I went back to google news. On  CNN one can read that the economy slowed:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/china_growth2.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>I think following this kind of &#8216;news&#8217; is a complete waste of time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I found this today on a web site of a pewspaper: Countless publications show the same AP story.
